Custom Filtering (Medical Insight)

The Department/Division and Custom Units views contain two types of filtering. The first consists of filters local to the unit and allows changing the comparison discipline (when a unit has multiple discipline affiliations) and SRI weights for the unit. These filters are considered local since each unit has specific disciplines to which it is affiliated, and it is very uncommon to desire a single set of SRI weights across units in different disciplines. These filters appear to the right of the unit name.

Expanding the filter shows the discipline selector and weights update. The discipline selection takes effect when it is changed, while any weight changes need to be applied via the Apply Weights button. The Reset Weights button will restore the default weighting.

The second set of filters are globally applicable and consist of peers, faculty, works, and saved filters. These are considered global since it is common usage to have a specific peer comparison group, set of faculty, or works time frames used across units. these filters appear below the unit header. The default view for these filters is the Peers Institution Type filter, which has been found to be the most commonly used.Image of default filter layout.

Clicking on the leftmost button will present the user with a selector for which filter set to view.

Before moving on, note that Peers has two filtering options, Institution Type and Institution Name. The choice is mostly important when saving filters. The Institution Type filter should be used when the desired peer set can change over time, such as AAU membership or Carnegie classifications. In cases such as this, the peer set will always reflect the state of institutional meta data within the selected release. On the other hand, the Institution Name filter should be used in cases like an aspirational peer set, where the institutions present are statically determined and the desire is that the specific institutions always be included, regardless of any changes to institutional meta data. Only one of Type or Name can be used when applying or saving filters.

Here we see institutional meta data selectors for AAU, Sector, Region, State, Carnegie classification, and Land Grant / APLU. Clicking on any of these will expand the selector, and each button where the selections have been modified will be highlighted. In the example below, we have modified the AAU selection and see the expanded Sector selector. If this filter were saved, it would store the meta data selections so that regardless of data release, the institutions present would always conform to the desired classifications.

If using the Peers Institution Name option, the only selector present will be for Institution Name. There is a quick filter option within this selector, for instance if the static peer set consists of all but three of the current AAU members, it is easy to filter down to AAU members and select only those within the desired set. The example below shows the expanded Peer Name selector, with the quick filter options within the funnel icon to the left of the search bar at the top of the selector. If this filter were saved, it would store the specific institutions selected, with no regard for meta data classifications.

The next available filter is for Faculty. This selector contains two options for Faculty Type and Faculty Rank.

The Faculty Type selector consists of Regular, Research, Clinical, and Additional Types. Additional types are very rare, making up less than 3% of all faculty within Medical Insight. These additional types consist of Librarian, Public Service, Other, and Unknown. The common purpose of this filter is to ensure that only Regular, Research, Clinical, or some combination of those are being considered, when that is desired.

The Faculty Rank filter can be similarly used for cases where the user just wants to see comparisons across a limited subset of ranks. The rank selections consist of Professor, Associate, Assistant, and Additional Ranks. While rare, the additional ranks of Instructor, Lecturer, Other, and Unknown do appear on occasion. These additional ranks make up less than 3% of all faculty within Medical Insight. The real power here is restricting to one of the standard ranks, such as Associate Professors only.

The next available filter set is for Works. Selecting Works will bring up a button for each work type. Clicking on these will present both a slider and text entry for adjusting the work time frames. The earliest date available varies per work, with Awards, Patents, and Trials having the option to include pre-2000 works. The example below shows a modification to the Articles time frame and the Grants selector opened.

These three filter sets can be used in conjunction, the presentation has been separated to better indicate what is currently being modified.

The final option in the individual selector contains the user's saved filters. Clicking on View Saved Filters will bring up the selector for any saved or shared filters. Here, filter details can be viewed via the left side drop down arrow and filters can be shared, edited, or deleted. Clicking on a filter name will instantly apply that filter.

Once desired Peers, Faculty, and Works selections have been made, the filters can be saved or applied via the Save and Apply buttons appearing to the right of the filters and underneath the release selector. The Reset button can be used whenever a custom filter has been applied, to return to the default data.

The All Filters button will open a side panel containing the Peers, Faculty, Works, and Saved filters all in one place. This panel will slide out from the right hand side of the screen. Each section can be expanded to access the same options as in the on screen buttons. Filters can also be saved, reset, or applied via the buttons at the bottom of the panel.

After your custom filters have been applied to the data, notice that the summary line of unit information changes to reflect this customization. The numbers of institutions, units, and faculty members presented in blue are the custom summary numbers after application of the filter. Also note that the custom Scholarly Research Index score is presented in blue. Image of updated comparison data when custom filters are applied.

Changing the unit will reflect the application of the custom filters until they are reset, and this will persist across unit types as well (Departments/Divisions, Custom Units).
